Itinerary from St. Peter's Square to the Gianicolo Belvedere

The itinerary leads from the Janiculum to the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, in the heart of the historic district of the same name. Descending the hill toward Trastevere, which extends along the banks of the Tiber, you come across the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, better known as the "Fontanone": a monumental fountain built around 1612 at the behest of Pope Paul V. From the open space in front of the fountain, you can enjoy one of the most evocative views of the city.

Continuing the route, you reach the Church of San Pietro in Montorio, built on the site where, according to tradition, the crucifixion of the Apostle Peter took place. The adjacent convent houses one of the greatest masterpieces of Renaissance architecture: Bramante's Tempietto. Designed by Donato Bramante and built at the beginning of the 16th century, the work stands at the center of the cloister and is famous for its harmonious proportions that recall the perfection of classical antiquity.
