Itinerary from Piazza di Spagna to Piazza del Pololo

We reach Piazza del Popolo in just a few minutes by walking along Via Frattina, a renowned pedestrian street famous for its high-end shopping, fashion boutiques, jewelry and silver shops, and exclusive restaurants.

Piazza del Popolo is one of the most majestic squares in Rome. Its name derives from the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, which stands at one of the corners of the square. The current architectural layout is the result of the neoclassical intervention of Giuseppe Valadier, carried out between 1811 and 1822.

The square is defined by the so-called "Trident," or three streets that radiate outward toward the heart of the city: Via del Corso in the center, Via del Babuino on the left, and Via di Ripetta on the right. The pinnacle of this urban system is the Piazza del Popolo. punctuated by the twin churches of Santa Maria in Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli.

On the north side of the square stands the Porta del Popolo, the ancient northern entrance to the city, for those arriving from the Via Flaminia. Finally, at the center of the square stands the Flaminian Obelisk, the first Egyptian obelisk transported to Rome by order of Emperor Augustus in 10 BC, dating back to the 13th century BC.
