Giardino degli Aranci

The Orange Garden is the name given to Savello Park, a park located on the Aventine Hill, which offers a magnificent view of the city.

The name "Orange Garden" derives from the characteristic presence of numerous bitter orange trees in the area adjacent to the Basilica of Santa Sabina, where, towards the end of the 13th century, a fortress of the Savelli family stood, hence the name "Savello Park." The orange trees were planted in memory of Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican order, who lived in the nearby convent and preached right here, beneath an orange tree.

The garden, as it appears today, was created in 1932 by architect Raffaele De Vico, when the City of Rome allocated The area that the Dominican fathers of the nearby church used as a vegetable garden is now a public park.
The park's terrace overlooks the Tiber, offering one of the most evocative views of Rome.
